Suspended Nollywood actress, Halima Abubakar files N30bn lawsuit against AGN

The National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Emeka Rollas, is the target of a lawsuit filed by Nollywood actress Halima Abubakar, who is seeking N30 billion in damages.

The lawsuit is based on claims that Rollas said things that hurt her career and reputation.

According to Abubakar’s filing, these comments have cost her money and caused her a great deal of emotional pain. She is requesting payment for the harm done as well as the effect it had on her career prospects in the motion picture business.

The lawsuit is related to an event that occurred on October 17, 2024, when the AGN announced Abubakar’s indefinite suspension from the guild via Rollas’ social media account.

The suspension was implemented because of claims that Abubakar spread false information about Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) members.

She is specifically charged with disseminating rumors about alleged extramarital affairs involving prominent personalities in the entertainment sector.

These accusations have not only called into question the integrity of the guild but also sparked a broader discussion about public figures’ duties to maintain professionalism and decency in their line of work.

Fans and other actors have taken notice of the situation, which has brought attention to the fine line that Nollywood draws between private and public lives.

Abubakar responded by expressing her surprise and asserting that she was not notified of the accusations or given a chance to respond to them prior to her suspension being made public on social media.

Abubakar’s legal team, P.D. Pius & Associates, denounced Rollas’ actions in a letter dated October 20, 2024, alleging that he purposefully damaged her reputation.

The letter stated, “Our client has been battling health issues for years, and despite maintaining a professional relationship, you chose this delicate moment during her recovery to spread a negative and false narrative.”

They maintained that Abubakar suffered psychologically and her reputation was harmed by the untrue allegations.

The lawyers insisted that Rollas post a public apology on his Instagram page and that the defamatory article be taken down right away.

In addition, they demanded N30 billion in compensation for the damage done to Abubakar’s reputation.

The letter ended by threatening legal action if these demands were not fulfilled within seven days.
