A wedding proposal in Kenya nearly turned tragic when the bride accidentally swallowed the engagement ring hidden in her food.
Jessica Hawayu and her family gathered for a family party on Sunday, March 12, at her home in Gongoni, Tana River County, according to The Nation Kenya.
She had no idea her future husband, Johannah Charo, and their family had planned a surprise engagement party.
The day began well, with food being prepared by family members. Jessica was tasked with preparing her father’s favorite meal.
“Pilau is our father’s favourite and also her boyfriend’s. So she knew she was doing it for dad and dedicated herself to it,” said her sister, Melanie Hawayu.
The boyfriend and his friends hung out in the neighborhood while waiting for permission from his girlfriend’s family.
They received a text around 2pm instructing them to begin moving toward the location as the tables were being set up.
The lady’s mother and boyfriend devised a plan to hide the engagement ring in a serving of pilau, where she would discover it.
“Dad had protested the idea but since there was no better idea, we decided to take a chance with the one we had and proceeded with it,” Melanie revealed.
Jessica’s mother continued to send her off on chores while burying the ring in the dish.
After sneaking into the property, Charo was about to emerge from behind the girlfriend’s bench.
The table was filled with laughter and joy as Charo tiptoed towards it, a move cut short when his girlfriend began choking on the food.
All efforts were made to save her as she rose from the table and ran to her father, who struck her on the back three times before she threw up the ring.
“We did not anticipate that would happen, but dad feared it would. That was so close, it left mum crying,” said Oscar Habil, Jessica’s younger brother.
Jessica was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation after collapsing.
Charo insisted on marrying her whether she was alive or dead, but she awoke to say, “Yes,” with the engagement ring already on her finger.
“I have learned a very hard lesson, that is how we would have killed my wife. “The devil is a liar,” Charo said over the phone.
Despite the fact that things did not go as planned, Jessica says she does not regret the family’s efforts because everyone wanted to make her day special.
