Student Sparks Outrage After Misusing Burial Donations on Girlfriend and Gambling

A lady on X (formerly Twitter), identified as @freakin_snow, has stirred widespread reactions online after revealing how her cousin allegedly squandered ₦800,000 meant for a coursemate’s father’s burial.

According to her post, students had contributed ₦5,000 each to support their grieving colleague. However, instead of handing over the funds, her cousin reportedly diverted a large portion for personal use.

She claimed he spent ₦350,000 to buy a new phone for his girlfriend and another ₦50,000 on an outing. In a risky attempt to recover the remaining ₦400,000, he allegedly staked the money on a betting platform, hoping to win with “2 odds.”

Unfortunately, the gamble failed.

This boy used 350k to change his new girlfriend’s phone and took her out with 50k. His plan was to play 2 odds with the remaining 400k and recover the money. Well, he did play the 2 odds and sporty collected the money,” she wrote.

The situation reportedly worsened after the cousin tried to recover the lost funds by selling his personal belongings, including his generator and fridge. Despite efforts to salvage the situation, his girlfriend allegedly refused to return the phone and has since ended the relationship.

Reactions Trailing the Viral Post

The story has triggered a wave of mixed reactions online, with many users expressing disappointment, criticism, and lessons to be learned:

Big Drey:

Well I’m glad he learned his lessons. Women don’t deserve all that amount of love.”

Scott Xavier:

Similar thing happened in my freshman year. A dude running for departmental president borrowed money to impress people, spent over 2M, and still lost the vote.”

Biggest Tee:

Did the girl force him to change her phone? He spent recklessly. Nobody should bail him out again.”

No perfect man:

Turning a support fund meant for someone grieving into gambling is a serious breach of trust. This could damage his reputation long-term.”
