Controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has alleged that there are plans to target him under the guise of branding him a Boko Haram terrorist.
Gumi said he became aware of the alleged plot after receiving an early-morning phone call from an unidentified contact in Abuja, whom he described as a security source. According to the cleric, the caller informed him that his name had surfaced during deliberations at a national security meeting.
He claimed the discussions allegedly focused on portraying him as a terrorist figure, a move he believes could endanger his life.
The cleric made the disclosure while addressing members of his congregation in a video that has since gone viral on social media.
“I received a call from a top official in Abuja informing me that I am among those marked by the U.S. for elimination through an American airstrike, under the pretext of being part of Boko Haram,” Gumi said in the video. He urged northern leaders and Islamic clerics to speak out against what he described as false allegations.
Gumi also questioned prevailing narratives around terrorism, arguing that the emergence and persistence of insurgent groups are linked more to the actions and interests of global powers than to local religious leaders.
“Even Americans said they came to fight terrorists, so who are the terrorists? They are the ones,” he stated.
The claims have sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians debating the implications of the allegations and the cleric’s long-standing controversial views on insurgency and security issues in the country.
