Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has stirred mixed reactions on social media following his response to a public display of affection from his wife, Tamunominni Makinde, during a recent official event.
The couple attended a dinner and award night on Wednesday, February 5, organized to mark Oyo State’s 50th anniversary. In a video now circulating online, Tamunominni, who was standing beside her husband as he sat, leaned in to give him a kiss.
However, the Governor appeared to pull away, an action many viewers interpreted as a rejection of the affectionate gesture. In what seemed like an effort to diffuse the moment, his wife laughed it off, while other dignitaries present looked on.
The clip has since generated widespread reactions across social media platforms. While some users criticized the Governor’s response, describing it as uncomfortable or unnecessary, others defended him, suggesting his action may have been due to personal boundaries or public decorum.
One social media user commented, “He’s probably a shy man.” Another wrote, “Omg, why? I’m sending her hugs. This is horrible.”
The incident has reignited conversations around public displays of affection, marital respect, and the expectations placed on public office holders, especially political leaders, when appearing with their spouses at official functions.
As the debate continues, neither the Governor nor his wife has publicly addressed the viral clip.
