To celebrate the New Year, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has authorized the release of 104 prisoners from various prisons.
Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), the attorney general and commissioner for justice, released a statement on Friday.
On the advice of the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, he claimed Sanwo-Olu signed the release order on December 28.
According to Onigbanjo, the inmates’ release is consistent with the governor’s pledge to reduce prison overcrowding in Lagos as part of the Justice Sector Reforms.
According to the commissioner, the Advisory Council on Prerogative carefully considered the applications in accordance with the relevant regulations.
The body took into account the data provided by the prison administration, the crime’s specifics, the length of incarceration, the inmates’ ages, health, and behavioral patterns.
The Federal Republic of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution’s Sections 212(1) and (2) provide support for the exercise (as amended).
