The scarcity of new naira notes wreaked havoc on Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Friday, sparking violent protests.
The protest spread throughout the metropolis, from the Ikoku area of Mile 3 to Ikwerre Road in Mile 1.
Many merchants closed their doors and fled.
A detachment of police officers in patrol teams and an Armoured Personnel Carrier has been stationed in the area to quell the situation, according to our correspondent who visited the area.
Meanwhile, hoodlums hijacked the protest in order to rob and dispossess passers-by of their belongings.
Hundreds of hoodlums stormed the Mile 3 and Mile 1 markets, forcing merchants to accept the old notes or risk their wares.
