President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has presented a controversial condition for increasing the minimum wage to N250,000.
In a recent meeting, President Tinubu made an offer to accommodate Labor’s demand for a higher minimum wage, but he attached a condition that would increase the cost of gasoline at the pump.
According to Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Tinubu proposed increasing the minimum wage to N250,000 in exchange for a change in the price of gasoline.
Ajaero claims that the Labour representatives strongly objected to this proposal.
According to Ajaero, the labor leaders felt that the requirement was excessively severe, as it would worsen the already severe economic challenges that Nigerians are currently facing.
“The best way to ensure that we protect Nigerians from further hardship was to accept N70,000.
“The President proposed at the last meeting, ‘I will give you guys N250,000, if you allow me to equally increase the pump price of petroleum products.’ We said no, stating that we must go and consult.
“We went over there today to tell him no,” adding that the labor movement can make concessions without letting Nigerians continue to suffer as a result of rising fuel prices.
