Pregnant woman in labor passes away after hospital refuses treatment over ₦500k deposit

Tragically, a pregnant woman in labour died after being refused medical care at a hospital because she could not afford a ₦500,000 deposit.

A post about the tragic event went viral on X, the platform that was formerly known as Twitter.

In the video, the expectant mother is seen inside a car with her husband while she was still alive, en route to the hospital.

Her distressed husband could be heard in the video desperately trying to keep her conscious.

He repeatedly called her name and urged her to stay strong for their children.

My goodness, Kemi, look at me. Stay strong, look at me. Think about your kids, please. You need to be very strong for me,” he pleaded.

Struggling to respond, the woman appeared weak.

The caption of the video revealed that the couple had initially gone to a hospital, but the woman was refused treatment because they couldn’t afford the ₦500,000 deposit.

They were referred to another hospital, but despite their efforts, she did not survive.

As the video spread online, many concerned individuals flooded the comment section, expressing their outrage and sympathy.

See some reactions below:

@ihe69: “This is very painful. When I lost my wife in 2020, money was available, but it was time to go, in accordance with the will of God. People die even in the world best hospital. If it wasn’t the will of God, she would’ve survived one way of the order. May her soul rest in peace.”

@enejih7: “What is going on in this country??? What ?? A pregnant woman?? Mhen !!! This is bad.”

@LightUp_9ja: “This stupid nonsensical act Dat when u bring in a patient who darely need URGENT medical atention, instead of treating & providing first aid to D pregnant woman, they demanding money first. D hospital that denied that innocent woman should b investigated & justice must prevail”

@AkoredeShotayo: “Ha, my God how do we explain this?”

@ayampeky: This just broke my heart 💔. Haven’t they been going for antenatal care during the course of the pregnancy ? Urgent medical care, what is that ? This news isn’t complete! If you have been following your wife or she’s been going with you for her routine doctor’s visits, you must’ve had in mind how much child delivery is and will surely start saving towards it. I believe this man has questions to answer!

@iam_SMB1: Y’all should just take a look at how he was trying all his best to not let his wife give up 🤦 he kept calling her back to life and reminding her of their children and every beautiful thing that could actually make the woman stay alive. Then one hospital that said they’re private hospital denied them of medical treatment all because they couldn’t come up with a deposit atm. Shame on Nigeria and its flag.

@olisaobiora: It’s not the fault of the hospital. It’s the fault of the government! In more developed climes citizens have health insurance, that’s how they are able to access healthcare whenever the need it. You can’t expect a doctor who is running a business and also suffering under the harsh conditions of the economy to offer free services! I feel sorry for him and the loss of his wife but let’s direct our anger is disappointment to the right people.

@idiakosa: Man, this is so sad 😢. The hospital is evil. Why do we value money than precious human lives? This is crazy! Her only crime was to get pregnant 💔💔😢
