A pregnant woman in Ghana has appealed to authorities to release her husband from prison after he was sentenced to six years for assaulting her.
The woman, identified as 22-year-old Priscilla Sackey, said she never expected the situation to end with her husband serving such a lengthy prison term.
Her husband, Richard Adjei, is currently behind bars after being convicted over reports of domestic violence.
According to Priscilla, the situation began when she reported Richard to the police after he allegedly beat her. She explained that her intention was only to frighten him and make him stop the abuse, not to have him imprisoned.
She said that when officers first came to arrest him, Richard was not at home. However, when he later returned and discovered that she had reported him, he allegedly attacked her again.
The second incident reportedly worsened the situation and drew further attention to the case.
Priscilla said her aunt became furious after learning about the repeated abuse and decided to pursue the matter more seriously. The aunt reportedly filed another complaint with the authorities, which eventually led to Richard’s arrest and prosecution.
Following the trial, the court found him guilty and sentenced him to six years in prison.
Speaking during an interview with Crime Check, Priscilla acknowledged that her husband had been abusive in the past but said she still needs his presence and support as she prepares to raise their child.
She added that the situation has become even more difficult because both her own family and her husband’s relatives have reportedly abandoned her.
Priscilla said that if Richard were free, he would at least be able to work and help provide for their child.
“At least if Richard were here, he would be working and helping to take care of us. Please help me get him released,” she pleaded.
