Port Harcourt Tenant Decries “Insulting” N500,000 Compensation Amid Renovation Plans

A housing dispute in Port Harcourt has ignited strong reactions online after a tenant accused her landlord of offering a compensation she described as “insulting” ahead of planned renovations.

The tenant, who recently paid ₦3 million for a one-bedroom apartment, shared her frustration on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the apartment is less than a year old. She claimed the landlord now wants to renovate the property and is offering only ₦500,000 as compensation.

“I paid 3 million naira for a one-bedroom apartment in Port Harcourt THREE MILLION and the house isn’t even up to one year old,” she wrote.

The tenant expressed disbelief over the landlord’s proposal, questioning how a fraction of her rent could be considered fair.

How does that even make sense? How is that fair?” she asked, highlighting the financial strain many residents face.

Describing the offer as both “painful and insulting,” she accused some landlords in the city of being insensitive to tenants’ financial challenges.

People are struggling to survive, to pay rent, to stay afloat, and you think 500k is compensation for 3 million? This is not just unfair—it’s painful and insulting,” she added.

The post has sparked widespread debate on tenants’ rights and fair compensation during property renovations in Port Harcourt, with many sympathizing with the tenant’s plight.
