Thompson, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) assigned to the Elemoro Police Station in Lagos, is being investigated for providing his bank account information to a man who is the subject of an ongoing investigation.
The case concerns a land dispute between Israel Balogun, the brother of local government official Hon. Temitope Ogungbo.
ASP Thompson invited Israel to be questioned after Ogungbo petitioned the police.
Thompson followed up with a second text message with his bank account information after sending the formal invitation:
“That is the invitation I sent to him. Whatever is his response, I will forward it to you. This is my account number 2068831510, Zenith Bank, Thompson.”
The message raised concerns of attempted bribery, a serious offense within the police force.
Israel charged Ogungbo, the Ibeju Lekki Supervisor for Education, with planning a violent assault on him in relation to their late father’s property. He was hospitalized for stab wounds sustained during the assault.
According to him, Temitope boasted of having power over political and law enforcement officials and threatened to use force.
After reporting the case in spite of the threats, Israel was attacked once more later that evening.
Israel, which is currently recuperating, is requesting public assistance out of concern for potential police bias and additional harm.
The police have yet to comment on Thompson’s conduct or the case.
