According to a disturbing incident that surfaced on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), a young man was forced to confess to being an Indian hemp dealer after police officers in Calabar broke into his flat and demanded 300,000 from him.
According to the post, the victim is a university student and a ward of the person narrating the ordeal.
The young man’s flat was allegedly broken into by officers allegedly from the Anti-Cultism unit on April 13, 2025, without any justification.
In the post, the man wrote: “I am writing this complaint on behalf of my ward who contacted me after a group of police officers known as ‘Anti-Cultism’ within Calabar Metropolis broke into his apartment. They forced him to swear an oath admitting he was an Indian hemp dealer.”
He further alleged that the officers held the young man at gunpoint and forced him to transfer all the money in his account. Out of fear for his life, the student allegedly called his relatives and raised ₦300,000 to secure his release.
“He was detained overnight, beaten, and only released after the transfer was completed. Before letting him go, the policemen demanded he serve as a mole and report on young men in his area. They warned him not to speak up or they would ‘come back for his head,’” the statement added.
The victim, described as a struggling student of the University of Calabar, has since reported the matter to the Uwanse Police Division and provided a formal statement.
“My ward is living in fear and is now scared to return to school. I have all the transaction receipts and a photo of the injury he sustained to his eye. Unless someone intervenes, this young man may be forced to abandon his education,” the complainant appealed.
He called on the Nigeria Police Force, particularly the Public Complaint Response Unit (@PoliceNG_CRU), to take up the matter and ensure justice is served.
“@PoliceNG @PoliceNG_CRU, he is ready to provide any information needed to support his complaint. We are counting on your integrity.”
