Police asked to investigate X user over alleged ₦3.5m scam for unverified ₦10m transplant claim

An X user named @barbiecuefish has been tasked by the Nigeria Police Force to look into allegations of defrauding the public after receiving over ₦3.5 million in donations under the false pretense that her sister needed ₦10 million for a kidney transplant, without offering any proof to back up the claim.

This is contained in a series of posts shared on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter.A user, @usifoh_gift, tagged the police and other pertinent authorities in her call for action after raising the alarm and urging them to intervene.

The dispute started when @barbiecuefish uploaded a video requesting donations. In her plea, she wrote:

“Please guys, I really need your support 🙏. It wasn’t easy for me to put this on the internet, but I have no other choice. Help me share too 🙏.”

She included her bank details for donations:

“Account Number: 2403903690″

“Bank: Zenith Bank”

“Name: Dorcas Eboselumwen Akpolo”

In another post, she added: “Good day everyone, if many of you have noticed, I haven’t been online for a while now because I have been trying to sort out some things offline. But it has choked up my neck that I can’t handle it alone anymore. My sister has serious health issues and we are in need of 7 million.”

“Please, I am in need of you guys’ support. Anything will help. Nothing is too small. Please help me save my little sister 🙏🙏😭😭. I don’t have any other options but this.”

After days of fundraising, she shared an update: “God bless each and every one of you. Since yesterday, I have been able to raise ₦1.5 million.”

“It’s remaining ₦5.5 million. I really appreciate you guys that came through for me. And for the hate comments—I expected them before I came out to ask for help. I believe God will use y’all to send.”

But after earning more than ₦3.5 million, a lot of supporters and onlookers started requesting documentation, like a medical report, to support her sister’s illness. @barbiecuefish only promised to provide such proof later, but failed to do so.

In response to the backlash, she wrote: “Hello everyone. I don’t know why you guys feel like I’m lying, but it’s fine—I understand. I will never do anything that will bring me or the people who have helped me so far down.”

“This is social media—I know how it works. So why would I want to bring bad name for myself?”

“So please bear with us. I will definitely post the medical report and the amount. She didn’t sleep all through the night, so I believe she’s sleeping now, because she was on call with me till this morning.”

“I’m not running away. I will definitely post the doctor’s report. When she wakes up, I will tell her to send it to me. But I have screenshots of all the payments I’ve sent since last year till this year. If you guys want me to post it, I will. Please bear with me. Thanks.”

As of 19 hours after she made this pledge, @barbiecuefish had yet to offer any proof for her assertion. Concerned about the inconsistencies and delay, @usifoh_gift publicly called on authorities to look into what she called a “rapid scam case.”

She tweeted: “Hi @PoliceNG, allegedly @barbiecuefish and her assistant @DiianaD_ planned together to scam people of their money.”

“Barbiecue came out here to tell the people of X that she needs about ₦10 million for her sister’s kidney transplant, and @DiianaD_ attested to it, claiming it’s true—without proof or evidence. We urge you to look into this because a lot of people have donated their hard-earned money to her 🥹🙏🏾 @PoliceNG @NigerianNavy @officialEFCC.”
