The Anambra State Government has mandated an investigation into the suspected murder of Mrs. Ogechukwu Okafor by her husband, Mr. Elijah, through the state Ministry of Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare.
According to information obtained, the incident occurred on August 13, 2024, but the deceased person’s family only reported it to the ministry after noticing some strange behavior from the husband.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare’s media assistant, Chidimma Ikeanyionwu, revealed this in a press release on Wednesday.
According to Ikeanyionwu, the culprit who is said to be a pastor, committed the alleged incident in Nimo community in Njikoka Local Government Area of the state.
The statement read in part, “The deceased uncle, Mr Samuel Onuorah, from Abatete community, who led the family member to lay the complaint at the ministry, alleged that he got a call from her late niece’s husband that her niece, Ogechukwu, fell from four-storey building and died.
“Mr. Elijah Emeka Ibeabuchi is the husband of the late Ogechukwu Okafor. He is from Nimo in the Njikoka Local Government Area of the Anambra State.
“The deceased’s uncle, Mr. Onuorah, stated that while seeking justice at the office of the Commissioner for Women Affairs, they learned that their daughter was stabbed to death by Elijah on both her neck and chest, not as the husband had claimed.
“He further revealed that their doubts were cleared after they went to the mortuary where the said husband had deposited their daughter’s corpse and saw evidently that she didn’t fall from any storey building as claimed by the husband.”
Ify Obinabo, the commissioner, responded to the news by urging social media users, human rights advocates, women’s organizations, and all other relevant parties to assist the state government in making sure the deceased receives justice.
Obinabo vows that the state government would probe the incident while urging everyone to lend their voice on the matter.
She went on to say that she would also let the state governor know, and that the issue would be investigated to ensure that the departed received justice.
