Despite being legally married to a Nigerian woman, an American man known as Oyinbo has sparked controversy after complaining about the difficult process of getting a Nigerian passport.
In a social media video that went viral, the visibly irate man and his Nigerian wife were seen criticizing the nation’s immigration laws, particularly those that affect Nigerian women’s foreign spouses.
nHe claims that a significant discrepancy in the procedure was discovered by his research: a foreign woman who marries a Nigerian man can easily become a citizen of Nigeria and eventually receive a passport. However, in order to be eligible for the same privilege, a foreign man married to a Nigerian woman must reside in Nigeria for at least 15 years.
“It’s not right,” he said, pointing out that he is legally married to a Nigerian woman, and they have two children together. However, he continues to face hurdles in becoming recognized as a Nigerian.
His wife also voiced her displeasure, claiming the policy is antiquated and discriminatory. The couple urged the Nigerian government to amend its immigration laws to reflect equality and fairness, particularly in light of the growing prevalence of cross-cultural marriages in the modern world.
The video has since sparked discussions online, with many Nigerians echoing the couple’s sentiments and calling for reform in the nation’s immigration and citizenship laws.
