On Tuesday, Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom directed the lifting of the state’s motorcycle ban in the Sankara axis.
According to a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Nathaniel Ikyur, the ban is lifted immediately.
Ortom had announced in March 2021 a ban on Toyota Corolla old models, known in the state as ‘duck yanch’, and motorcycles in the Sankera axis, Ukum, and Katsina-Ala Logo Local Government Areas due to criminal activities.
According to Ikyur’s statement, the directive was in accordance with a court decision that overturned a Benue State Security Council order that prohibited the use of motorcycles in the state’s Sankera axis.
It said, in part, “Ortom maintained that as a government that believes in the rule of law and due process, his administration was bound to revert its action.
“The action of the security council followed the continued use of the motorcycles by criminals and bandits in the area to wreak havoc on their communities which led to the destruction of the rural economy, social and political life of the area.”
Netizens reacts to the news:
@tobieClb_: This is sha a lie, motorcycles weren’t banned in Benue.
@Terkuma1: Motorcycles were banned in Sankera. The court ordered the ban to be lifted last month but he didn’t comply.
This is not about election.
The ban was lifted by a court order in February. He is only complying.
