A female prospective corps member travelling from Enugu to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, was killed in a tragic motor vehicle accident on Monday, January 20.
The deceased was one of 12 potential corps members in a commercial bus with 14 seats that was involved in the collision.
. The accident happened close to Amenu village in Okposi, on the Amasiri-Okiigwe route.
According to witnesses, the bus carrying the corps members of Batch C Stream II lost control and collided with a Mercedes-Benz tipper truck that was stopped.
kThe deceased, whose identity was not verified at the time of this report, passed away as a result of their injuries in the collision, and other people were injured to varied degrees. Residents and security guards quickly pulled the injured people from the wrecked bus and took them to the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS) so they could receive medical attention.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ebonyi State Sector Commander, Igwe Henry, acknowledged the accident but pointed out that his team had not arrived until the victims had been evacuated. “At the time our men from Amasiri Unit Command got to the scene, the victims had already been rescued. However, the crash occurred at about 14:00 hours along the Amasiri-Okiigwe route. “The vehicles involved were a Toyota commercial bus, grey in color, and a Mercedes-Benz tipper. It’s a tragic incident, and investigations are ongoing,” he said.
The Ebonyi State NYSC Coordinator, Foluke Oladeinde, expressed shock over the incident but refrained from making detailed comments. “I am not in the right frame of mind to talk now. I am in the hospital with the victims. Yes, the accident occurred, but I can’t talk right now,” she said.
New worries regarding road safety for NYSC members attending orientation camps have been brought up by the tragedy. Locals have urged authorities to enforce stronger safety rules and improve road conditions in order to stop similar incidents in the future. Demands for more safety measures on highways have risen as the NYSC community grieves the loss of one of its potential members.
