Nigerian Woman Turns Down ₦200k Remote Job, Later Requests ₦20k — Sparks Debate Online

A Nigerian married woman has stirred mixed reactions on social media after reportedly declining a ₦200,000 remote job offer due to childcare concerns, only to later reach out to the same employer asking for ₦20,000 financial assistance.

The story was shared on Facebook by Chioma Ifeanyi-Eze, and has since ignited conversations around motherhood, trust, and the realities of balancing work with raising a young child.

According to the account, the woman—who has an eight-month-old baby—was offered a virtual administrative assistant role that would allow her to work from home while earning ₦200,000 monthly, a figure higher than her husband’s ₦168,000 salary.

However, she turned down the opportunity, explaining that she had no one she trusted to care for her baby, even within the same house. Despite the employer suggesting she could hire help and still monitor her child closely, she maintained that no one could care for her baby as well as she could.

Following her decision, the employer—reportedly frustrated after encountering similar responses from other women—eventually offered the role to a man.

In a twist that fueled further debate, the woman allegedly contacted the employer two weeks later, requesting ₦20,000 financial assistance.

The situation has since divided opinions online. While some argue that her decision reflects a mother’s natural instinct to protect her child, others believe she may have missed a valuable opportunity that could have improved her family’s financial situation.

Many commenters also pointed out the broader issue: the lack of trusted, affordable childcare options and the pressure placed on women to “do it all” without adequate support.

Ultimately, the question remains subjective—what would you have done in her position?
