Nigerian Man Wins Court Case Against Ex Who Refused Marriage After He Funded Her University Education

A young Nigerian man reportedly dragged his ex-girlfriend to court after she refused to marry him despite his funding her university education, sparking widespread discussion online. The case was shared on Facebook by Obasi Nzubechi.

According to the man, he met the lady shortly after she completed secondary school and informed her parents of his intention to marry her. Her parents allegedly insisted she attend university first and told him he could only marry her if he sponsored her education, expected to last four years. He accepted the arrangement.

After the lady graduated, he approached her about marriage, but she reportedly said she was not ready and avoided him without giving clear reasons. When he raised the matter with her parents, they advised him that their daughter, being an adult, could not be forced to marry and encouraged him to move on.

The lady reportedly stated, “I no longer have feelings for him,” and refused to refund the education, saying, “I have no plans to refund him. He acted on his own free will… my parents only suggested that.”

The presiding judge ruled in favor of the man, emphasizing that while marriage cannot be compelled, a serious promise relied upon to one party’s detriment may warrant legal remedy. The judgment stated that the plaintiff’s financial investment in the defendant’s education was undertaken upon a clear expectation of marriage. Her refusal without cogent reason constituted a breach causing financial and emotional loss.

As a result, the court ordered the defendant to pay ₦15,000,000 (Fifteen Million Naira) in damages to the plaintiff.
