A Nigerian man has gone viral on social media after sharing a baffling experience with a real estate agent while trying to rent an apartment.
The man, identified on Twitter as @Nnamdi, was searching for a self-contained apartment in a fenced compound with a gate. Initially optimistic, his excitement quickly turned to surprise when he received a full breakdown of the charges from the agent.
The list included the rent for the self-contained unit, a caution fee, legal fees, service charges, agency fees—and, most surprisingly—a “drink” fee. The message read:
“Self-contain N450k, portable fence with gate, caution fee N50k, legal N45k, service charge N50k, agency N90k, and… drink N30k.”
The inclusion of a “drink” fee left @Nnamdi—and social media users—stunned. His post quickly went viral, sparking a flood of reactions from Nigerians who shared similar experiences, offered advice, or simply joked about the absurdity of the extra charge.
