A Nigerian man has ignited intense online debate after offering controversial advice to women on how to react if they are physically assaulted by their mother-in-law in the presence of their husband.
In a viral video shared on X (formerly Twitter) by @Teeniiola, the man argued that any husband who watches his wife get slapped by his mother and does nothing has failed in his responsibility as a protector. According to him, silence in such a moment is equivalent to approval.
He maintained that no woman should tolerate physical abuse in marriage under the guise of keeping peace or showing respect to family, especially when her safety and dignity are at stake.
Speaking bluntly, he said:
“If your mother-in-law slaps you in the presence of your husband and he didn’t do anything, slap her back.”
The statement quickly divided social media users. Some women supported his stance, arguing that self-defence becomes necessary when a spouse refuses to intervene. Others, however, cautioned that such actions could worsen marital conflicts and destabilize homes.
Reacting to the video, one user wrote, “You people will just come online and be giving advice that will scatter people’s home.” Another added, “Slap mother-in-law? Hmmn.”
The debate continues as users weigh the balance between self-respect, safety, and maintaining family harmony.
