
A Nigerian man, Aliyu Tunde Muhammad Elyaqub, recently went viral on Facebook after sharing why he refused a ₦50,000 appreciation gift following an accidental credit to his account.
The Incident
On April 3, 2025, Aliyu discovered ₦2.2 million mistakenly transferred into his Opay account while using his phone.
The sender, whose identity was not disclosed, reached out, appearing confused and stammering.
Aliyu laughed during the phone conversation but promptly refunded the full amount and sent the transaction receipt to the individual.
The Appreciation Offer
Later, the individual sent ₦50,000 as a gesture of thanks.
Aliyu refunded the gift, stating he did not want to be paid for simply doing the right thing.
Aliyu’s Message
In his viral Facebook post, Aliyu emphasized:
“Kindness shouldn’t come with a price tag. The amount is a big percentage of my monthly salary, but because I believe I don’t have to be paid for being kind, and for doing what I must do.”
He also shared that the individual expressed deep gratitude, joking that Aliyu “liberated him from going to hell.”

Aliyu noted that Fintech accounts in Nigeria are secured.
Most are insured by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), ensuring safety in digital transactions.
