A Nigerian man has narrated a heartbreaking ordeal of how he spent almost three decades behind bars after being wrongfully linked to the death of a close friend.
According to his account, the man was arrested at just 19 years old after authorities accused him of being involved in the death of a man he shared a room with. Despite repeatedly maintaining his innocence, he was convicted and sent to prison based solely on his presence at the scene.
He revealed that he remained incarcerated for 29 years, eight months, and three days, a period he described as a lifetime stolen from him.
The man explained that his only connection to the case was that he had been sleeping in the same room where the deceased was later found. No concrete evidence directly linking him to the death was presented, yet the circumstance proved enough to seal his fate for nearly 30 years.
Recounting his painful experience, he said:
“I went to prison at the age of 19. I spent 29 years, eight months, and three days behind bars simply because I was sleeping in a room with a friend who later died.”
His story has sparked renewed conversations about wrongful convictions, the pace of justice in Nigeria, and the devastating impact of prolonged incarceration on innocent lives. Many have called for reforms in the criminal justice system to prevent similar tragedies and to ensure timely review of cases involving questionable evidence.
