A Nigerian man living in the United States has gone viral on social media after sharing an unexpected experience he had while trying to withdraw money from an Automated Teller Machine (ATM).
The man, identified as @Ekun II on X (formerly Twitter), explained that he had driven to a drive-through ATM to withdraw some cash. However, something unusual caught his attention before he even inserted his card.
According to him, he noticed a $100 bill hanging from the ATM’s cash dispenser, apparently left behind by the previous user.
He said he pulled out the money and proceeded to withdraw his own cash, but soon found himself battling mixed thoughts about what to do with the unexpected $100.
Part of him felt tempted to simply take the money and leave, especially since, as he noted, “banks have plenty money.” However, another thought quickly followed, making him reconsider the decision.
In his tweet, he wrote:
“Something just happened. I drove to the drive-through ATM to get cash. As I was about to insert my card, I saw a $100 bill hanging from the cash dispenser. I pulled it out, got my own cash, then temptation hit: just take the money and go. Banks have plenty money.
Another thought came: Some because of just $100, you want to destroy the good life God has given you? I went back inside the bank and returned the money. In all my life in the United States, you can never be too careful.”
Eventually, the man decided to walk into the bank and return the $100, saying he didn’t want to risk any trouble over money that wasn’t his.
His post quickly gained attention online, with many users sharing their opinions on the situation.
Reactions Online
Several social media users reacted to the story, with some praising his decision while others questioned his motives.
Letter Mike commented:
“So in essence you actually wanted to keep the money but you were afraid that one CCTV somewhere is watching you.”
Oluwaseun jokingly wrote:
“Seyi, make I no catch you for this thing wey you do.”
Mazi shared a critical view:
“This shows that you would have taken the money if not that you know you’d be caught and you would serve severe consequences. Simply explains why Nigerians behave differently at home and abroad.”
Brother Sinz supported the man’s choice, saying:
“Wise decision 👍 Cos if not, dem fit tag person as thief, send am go jail and lastly return am to the source of origin. Living in the state requires big discipline.”
The post has continued to generate discussions online, with many people debating whether the man returned the money out of honesty or fear of possible consequences.
