Nigerian Man Alleges Police Harassment After Attempting to Save Collapsed Stranger in Asaba

A Nigerian man, Tomi Akporoghene Wojuola, has recounted a traumatic encounter with officers of the Nigerian Police Force after he attempted to save the life of a young man who collapsed on a road in Asaba, Delta State.

Wojuola shared his experience on Facebook, explaining that the incident occurred earlier in the year when he noticed an unconscious young man by the roadside. Acting on medical advice he received after calling a doctor, he rushed the victim to a nearby hospital. Sadly, the man was pronounced dead on arrival.

According to Wojuola, he requested that the police be informed, stressing that he did not know the deceased and only acted out of concern. However, upon reporting the matter at the GRA Police Station, Asaba, he was allegedly accused of murder, with his statement taken under caution.

He further alleged that the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Joseph Udoh, verbally threatened him, stating that he would be punished for “acting like Jesus.” Wojuola claimed the threat was made despite confirmation from the deceased’s family that their son had an underlying medical condition.

The situation reportedly escalated until the intervention of a top government official, whose involvement led to Wojuola’s release and the withdrawal of the murder allegation. Despite this, he alleged that police officers confiscated all the money in his bank account as bail, leaving him with only ₦2,000.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Wojuola said the experience made him understand why many Nigerians choose to record emergencies rather than intervene, out of fear of being criminalised.

As the year came to an end, he expressed gratitude for surviving the incident, noting that many Nigerians remain in detention over cases he described as less serious.
