In a heartwarming display of honesty, a Nigerian lady has earned widespread admiration online after returning ₦300,000 that was mistakenly credited to her bank account.
Sharing her experience on X (formerly Twitter) via her handle @cocoofabuja, the woman revealed that she woke up one morning to an unexpected alert of ₦300,000 from an unknown sender.
Although she admitted she urgently needed ₦200,000 to take care of personal matters, she said her conscience wouldn’t allow her to spend money that didn’t belong to her. She went about her day as usual until she received a phone call from a woman explaining that the money was sent in error and was intended to cover her mother’s hospital bills.
Without hesitation, @cocoofabuja requested the necessary details and promptly refunded the full amount. She humorously noted that her account balance returned to “default” after the refund but emphasized that doing the right thing outweighed the temporary benefit of the unexpected windfall.
She wrote in her post:
“Woke up this morning to an alert of 300k, I don’t know the sender neither do I remember asking anyone for money recently.
In my heart, I was excited; I needed exactly 200k out of this money to sort things out but my conscience wouldn’t let me.
I went about doing my chores till a call came in. The caller introduced herself, saying she mistakenly sent money to my account and it was meant for her mum’s hospital bills. I quickly requested her details and sent the money back, bringing my account back to default 😂😂😂😂.
I needed money yes, but not at the cost of someone’s tears. Good morning X.”
Her honesty and integrity have sparked widespread praise online, with many users applauding her decision to prioritize ethics over personal gain.
