A Nigerian lady has gone viral on X (formerly Twitter) after sharing a childhood experience that many users are calling both relatable and intense.
The lady, identified as @AdageorgeA, recounted an encounter with her father after she was caught watching TV at 2 a.m. According to her post, instead of immediately punishing her, her father sat down and watched TV with her until 7 a.m. before sending her off to school. However, he warned her teachers that if she slept in class, she would be disciplined. She shared that her father only beat her once a year, making it a rare but firm form of discipline.
Her tweet, which has amassed 7.3 million views, read in part:
“When my dad caught me watching movie at 2am, Sunday night. He asked me to continue and he sat down with me until 7am. He asked me to prepare for school like that and he said if the teachers called that I slept in the class. He will beat me. That’s how he does. He won’t beat you. He beat once in a year.”
Reactions from users:
Val Okwudiri: “Then I could watch movie till 5.30am when mom is about to wake up. Look at us now.”
Victor Ogbagbe: “Nepa guys were not nice 😂😂😂 so you mean they left the light all through the night? When you need them they will vanish.”
Jingles: “Wow. That was serious discipline.. Everything is not flogging…. Kudos to your Dad. Pls read my own experience on my timeline. Thank you.”
Chukwutem: “For the first time in your life you’d wish for NEPA to take light 😂.”
The thread sparked discussions about parenting styles, discipline, and how childhood experiences shape resilience, with many expressing nostalgia for the rare but firm disciplinary methods of parents back then.
