The Nigerian government has granted the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transport Workers of Nigeria a letter of approval (AUATWON).
Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment, made the presentation on Tuesday in Abuja.
All app-based transportation workers, online transportation services, and e-hailing drivers and operators are included in the new union.
Ngige described the registration as a watershed moment in labor administration, particularly in the trade union services sector.
According to the minister, the world’s informal sector, which employs the majority of workers, is being formalized.
“Today, we are breaking new ground with those who are employing themselves and from there, employing others”, he said.
On April 27, 2021, AUTWON applied for registration to provide IT-based transportation services to self-employed individuals.
