A Nigerian footballer, @TheRealOlagreat, recently caught the attention of Sevilla FC with a simple yet audacious request for a trial.
In response, Sevilla jokingly offered him a trial if he could get 100,000 retweets on his tweet.
Nigerians on X (formerly Twitter) backed him up, determined to reach the goal, and in less than a day, the tweet went viral, receiving far more retweets than the required 100,000.
.But rather than keeping their word, Sevilla FC shared a link to sign up for an under-19 team, which infuriated many because the Nigerian football player is much older than the legal age limit.
iIn his initial tweet, the football player expressly asked to try out for Sevilla’s first team.
The promise of 100,000 retweets was met with overwhelming support from Nigerians, who mobilized to help him achieve the goal. There were high hopes, and many people were anxiously anticipating an official invitation to the trial.
When Sevilla FC finally provided the link for under-19 registration, Nigerians vented their frustration and disappointment in the comments section.
The club was accused of misleading the football player and was chastised by many for not keeping its word.
The incident has since ignited a conversation about fairness and accountability in football engagements.
