Nigerian Doctor Faces Ultimatum: Quit Job or End Marriage, Sparks Online Debate

A Nigerian woman has sparked intense debate after revealing that her husband asked her to quit her job as a medical doctor immediately after she announced her promotion.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), she wrote:

Right after I shared the news of my promotion, my husband told me to quit my job as a doctor & become a full time housewife.

When I refused to give up the career I worked so hard for, he gave me an ultimatum. Resign by month-end or we go our separate ways.

Now he’s silent, sleeping in another room, all because I chose my dream.”

Her post quickly went viral, drawing hundreds of reactions and reigniting conversations about gender roles, ambition, and power dynamics in marriage.

Social Media Reactions Pour In

Many users expressed shock and support for the woman’s decision to protect her career.

Hermon wrote:

That’s not your husband. You married an enemy, not a husband. Fight for your dreams. They are valid. Marriage is not a place where one practices dominating over the other. Can two walk together except they agree?”

Lady Elena emphasized pre-marital communication:

Best to discuss these issues before marriage. Hope he changes his mind. Congrats on your promotion.”

Abimbola suggested caution:

Tell him you declined the promotion but you are keeping the job to see how he behaves… Competition in marriage is not healthy.”

Nelson blamed lack of preparation:

Signs of marriages start without counseling and proper agreements. I bet you people think love alone can run a marriage.”

Funmi questioned the husband’s expectations:

There are women who don’t have jobs and are not ready to work, why didn’t he marry from that category? My sis, hold your job tight o.”

DCMorgan added:

“This is exactly why women should get an education and get job experience. All of a sudden, the guy gives a crazy ultimatum.”
