A Nigerian businessman has sparked conversation online after sharing a surprising experience involving electricity supply in his area.
The story, posted on X (formerly Twitter) by user @Ehmywealth, highlights how wealth and connections can sometimes unlock services that appear out of reach for ordinary citizens.
According to the businessman, he had always wondered who truly controls electricity distribution during Nigeria’s frequent power outages. Like many Nigerians, he was used to unstable power supply and sudden blackouts.
However, his curiosity reportedly turned into shock when a friend allegedly made a phone call to a connection — described as a “plug” — to arrange three hours of uninterrupted electricity in their area simply because he was hosting a visitor.
The businessman said he watched in disbelief as the arrangement worked.
Reflecting on the incident, he suggested that in Nigeria, financial power can provide access to what he described as a “VIP version” of everyday services.
He wrote:
“I used to wonder who was behind the NEPA switch. Then a friend called his plug to order 3 hours of light in the area just because he had a visitor. I just sat there in shock. In this Nigeria, just have money. There is a VIP version of everything.
Netizens React
The post quickly gained traction online, drawing mixed reactions from social media users.
Many expressed disbelief at the claim, while others said they were not surprised, arguing that wealth and influence often determine access to better services in the country. Some users reacted humorously, while others pointed out the harsh reality faced by millions of Nigerians who struggle daily with unreliable electricity supply.
The story has once again ignited conversations about inequality, infrastructure challenges, and the perceived influence of money on access to basic amenities in Nigeria.
