Nigeria has taken home two silver medals from the Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) this year.
At the annual continental mathematics contest, which took place in Johannesburg, South Africa, the country’s two silver medal winners were Elvis Chiedozie Ekwelem from Rivers State and Oghenerukevwe Patrick Esemitodje from Lagos State.
Young African students from more than 20 countries on the continent came together for the competition.
Prof. Zeblon Vilakazi, the vice chancellor of the University of Witwatersrand and the event’s host, praised the remarkable intellectual curiosity, commitment, and aptitude of Nigerian students. He mentioned that the competition’s goal was to support young African mathematicians’ academic achievement and research.
According to Prof. Vilakazi, twenty countries participated in the Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) this year, with eight (8) more participating virtually.
He emphasized that the Nigerian student contingent’s outstanding performance demonstrates their in-depth subject knowledge.
He went on to say that the students are excellent prospects for the subject’s future growth since they showed the willingness, eagerness, and commitment to succeed in it at the continental level.
