NHIS: EFCC secures N800 million diverted months after recovering N2.9 billion

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, or EFCC, has recovered N900,000,000 more for the National Health Insurance Scheme, or NHIS.

In a statement issued on Saturday, EFCC Head of Media & Publicity Wilson Uwujaren announced the recovery.

Uwujaren claimed that the funds were fraudulently withheld by banks who refused to deposit them into the NHIS’ Treasury Single Account, or TSA.

According to the spokesperson, the recovered funds were released to NHIS on February 8, 2023.

The date was announced one year after N1,500,000,000 was recovered from various financial institutions.

“This is in addition to the N1,400,000,000 that was previously released to the Scheme on August 5, 2022,” Uwujaren explained.

Prof. Muhammad Nasir Sambo, Executive Secretary of the NHIS, praised the anti-graft commission for assisting in the recovery of the trapped funds.
