A man who left Nigeria at the age of 19 has reportedly been deported from the United States after spending nearly five decades in the country.
The heartbreaking development was shared by his granddaughter, identified as @Majormicc, in a viral post on TikTok. According to her, the family has not heard directly from her grandfather, Joe, since his deportation.
In the emotional post, she revealed that her mother was only able to speak with him twice while he was being held at an immigration detention facility in Louisiana. She claimed they were charged $106 for the two phone calls.
“Everything is happening so fast, we still haven’t heard from him. Also, my mum did talk with him twice when he was in Louisiana at the ICE center and they charged her $106,” the post read in part.
The granddaughter explained that her grandfather is nearly 70 years old and allegedly has no place to stay in Nigeria. She expressed frustration that the family was not given an opportunity to say goodbye before his removal.
“Elderly deportation shouldn’t happen like this. My grandfather is almost 70 years old. We need legal guidance and support, please share. I didn’t even get a chance to say goodbye. They didn’t allow anyone to say goodbye — no families to say goodbye,” she stated.
She also appealed to the public for legal advice and assistance as the family tries to understand what options may still be available.
As of now, the specific circumstances that led to the man’s deportation remain unclear.
