Mixed Reactions Trail Enioluwa Adeoluwa’s Take on Female Students’ Hair Rules

Nigerian influencer and media personality, Enioluwa Adeoluwa, has drawn attention to the continued enforcement of strict hair regulations for female students in public schools across the country.

Adeoluwa, who spoke with some students recently, revealed that the girls said their institutions do not allow them to plait their hair, with many compelled to maintain short or low-cut hairstyles in compliance with school rules.

Something that may seem small, but genuinely bothers me, is why public schools in Nigeria still ask girls to cut their hair. To what end? What exactly is the point?” he asked in a post that quickly gained traction online.

The post has since generated a wave of reactions:

Ray (@dereal_ray12) argued that the rule helps maintain uniformity, explaining that without it, some students’ hair may look unkempt, but cutting it ensures everyone appears neat and the same.

Iyke Ekwe (@EkweIkechi) noted that the practice is not limited to public schools, adding that many private institutions also enforce similar rules to maintain discipline and uniformity.

A Ray of Sunshine (@Sunshin…) suggested the policy may simply be a long-standing tradition, with schools continuing it because “it has always been done,” rather than for any strong reason.

Oladele Olabode (@dellz07) took a stricter stance, insisting that rules are rules and that parents who disagree should consider changing their child’s school.

Nkem4eva (@nwaegbe_nkem) highlighted the stress of managing natural hair, pointing out that it can be time-consuming and distracting, which may justify the low-cut policy for students.

The ongoing debate reflects broader conversations around discipline, tradition, and personal expression in Nigeria’s education system.
