A 30-year-old man, Motunrayo Olaniyi, has allegedly stabbed his newlywed wife, Olajumoke, to death at Amazing Grace Estate, Elepe in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

The couple reportedly got into a heated argument on Friday, which led to the incident.

In a statement released on Saturday by its spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident and said that Motunrayo had repeatedly stabbed the 25-year-old wife during the altercation, locked her in the room, and set it on fire.

He went on to say that following the act, the suspect also hurt himself.

However, it was reported that a group of police officers who had arrived at the scene put out the fire before finding Olajumoke’s lifeless body, which had wounds to her abdomen.

A portion of the statement said, “On October 4, Ikorodu Division received a distress call regarding an alleged domestic altercation between a recently married couple, Motunrayo Olaniyi, 30, and his wife Olajumoke, 25, in their room at Amazing Grace Estate, Elepe, Ikorodu.

“In the process, the husband reportedly stabbed the wife to death, locked her in the room, and set it ablaze, while he inflicted wounds on himself.

“Police from the Ikorodu Division responded to a distress call and put out the fire. They found Olajumoke’s lifeless body with abdominal wounds.”

Olaniyi was saved and taken to a nearby hospital, where he received treatment and was eventually released, according to the police spokesperson. From there, he was placed under police custody.

He claimed that following the altercation, a preliminary investigation showed that the suspect had stabbed his wife and injured himself slightly.

“The corpse has been deposited at Ikorodu General Hospital morgue for autopsy. Investigation is in progress”, he concluded.
