A Nigerian man has stirred intense reactions on social media after sharing his views on marriage, urging men not to legally wed a woman until they have lived together for at least five years and had children together.
The man, identified as Ayo Ayorinde, argued that many women allegedly conceal their true character before marriage and that time is the only reliable way to reveal a person’s true identity.
In his post, he advised men to carefully observe the family background of their prospective partner, particularly her mother, claiming that it could offer insight into her future tendencies.
He further suggested that after paying bride price or conducting a traditional wedding, couples should live together for several years before considering legal marriage.
According to him, legalizing the union should only come after the woman has proven to be peaceful, supportive, and faithful, and has given birth to one or two children.
Sharing his thoughts, Ayorinde wrote:
“Check the mother of your wife-to-be well; you would get some clue about her tendencies.
However, I think men should start living with nowadays women first after the bride price or traditional wedding has been conducted.
After say five years, if she is peaceful, supportive, faithful and has given you one or two children, you may then go ahead to marry her legally, that is if she insists on legal marriage.
95% of ladies pretend into marriage; it is time that reveals their true identity.
Men, stop legal marriage with ladies you have not lived with for five years at least and who have not had a child for you.”
Reactions
The post quickly went viral and triggered mixed reactions from social media users, with many sharing differing opinions.
Some users agreed with his perspective, arguing that spending time together before legal marriage helps couples understand each other better.
Others, however, strongly criticized the suggestion, saying it places women at a disadvantage and could leave them vulnerable if the relationship ends without legal protection.
Some also pointed out that having children before legal marriage could complicate issues of responsibility, rights, and family stability.
As the discussion continues online, the debate highlights the differing views many people hold about modern relationships, commitment, and the role of legal marriage in today’s society.
