A 32-year-old Sunday Abilewa has been placed under remand at Olokuta Correctional Center by a Magistrates’ Court in Akure Ondo State for allegedly k!lling his 68-year-old father.
Abilewa was arrested by men of the Ondo State Police Command and charged to court for murder.
According to the prosecutor, Inspector Abdulateef Suleiman, Abilewa strangled his father, Abu Abilewa, to death on December 31, 2024, at approximately 5:00 p.m., at the Eberi quarters in Isua Akoko, Ondo State.
Allegedly, the deceased refused the defendant’s offer to purchase a new motorcycle. It resulted in a fight, during which the defendant grabbed his father’s neck, killing him in the process. Efforts of the defendant’s mother to rescue the deceased proved abortive as the defendant was under the influence of hard drugs,” Suleiman said.
He claimed that the offense was punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code Cap 37, Vol. II, Laws of Ondo State, 2006, and that it violated Section 316.
The prosecutor, however, asked the court to remand the defendant to a custodial facility while the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) provided advice.
The defendant’s plea was rejected by the magistrate, Mrs. F.A. Akinboboye, who instead directed that he be placed under remand in custody until the DPP’s office could provide guidance.
Adeboboye adjourned the case till February 25, 2025, for mention.
