Lagos Reality Check: “Pretty Girls Make Money Easily”? Not Always

A young lady recently shared the harsh reality of moving to Lagos, shattering the online myth that “pretty girls make money effortlessly.”

In a viral video shared by @AsakyGRN on X (formerly Twitter), she explained how she spent her savings renting an apartment and hitting the clubs, hoping her looks would attract men who would financially reward her.

She said:

“I came to Lagos thinking I would make money just by being pretty. I rented an apartment, went clubbing, and gave it my all but men ignored me completely.”

Expecting to earn back her rent within two months just by using her looks, she danced and socialized, hoping for the so-called “pretty privilege” everyone online talks about. But nothing worked.

On that very night, two fair and naturally attractive girls arrived at the same clubs, and suddenly, men flocked to them, handing out bundles of cash. That’s when she realized:

“That’s when it hit me that I wasn’t the kind of girl Lagos men rewarded for just showing up.”

Struggling with expenses, she eventually had to move in with a friend, unable to afford her apartment anymore.

Online reactions were swift. One commentator wrote, “Lagos will teach you in a hard way, women with unbelievable imaginations.” Another added, “The lengths people take to risk is shocking.”

Her story serves as a stark reminder: Lagos life is tougher than Instagram filters suggest.
