Lady recounts painful moment ex-boyfriend laughed at her during NYSC bread incident

A lady has shared a memorable but painful experience she had with her ex-boyfriend during her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) days.

The lady, identified as @itohan-olat on the microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter), revealed that the incident happened while she was serving in Kogi State.

According to her, the moment occurred when she stopped to buy bread from an Igbira woman. While trying to confirm the freshness of the bread, she asked the seller a simple question.

However, the woman responded rudely.

“Her response was ‘no, it’s last year bread or so.’ People around me giggled and that was fine,” she recalled.

Although the reaction from the people around did not bother her much, things took a different turn when she turned around and noticed her boyfriend’s reaction.

To her surprise, he had burst into laughter.

She explained that he continued laughing throughout their journey home, which left her deeply hurt.

According to her, what made the situation painful was not the bread seller’s rude response, but the fact that her boyfriend—who had previously promised to always protect her—did nothing to support her in that moment.

He said it was very funny and he actually couldn’t stop laughing till we got home. Her response didn’t hurt me but what hurt me was the fact that the man who swore to protect me at all cost could not even step in when I needed him to. I healed from it but I never forgot that day,” she said.

Her story has since sparked conversations online, with many social media users sharing mixed reactions about whether the boyfriend’s reaction was harmless laughter or a lack of emotional support.
