Kaduna Electric confirms six fatalities in Zaria following power outage

Six fatalities from a power surge last week have been confirmed by Kaduna Electric management on Tuesday. 

A high electric voltage caused the burning of a city resident’s home and the deaths of 10 people. 

In contrast to some reports, six people died as a result of the incident, the company’s head of corporate communication, Malam Abdulazeez Abdullahi, said in a statement on Tuesday.

Mr. Aliya Jibril, Ibrahim Ja’afaru, Murtala Ibrahim, Malam Auwal, Solomon Yusuf, and ASP Kokuma Lumba were the victims, he said, adding that all the deceased people lived on Kagoro Close in Gwargwaje, with the exception of ASP Lumba, who lived in the Police Barracks. 

The company reportedly made contact with the families of the six victims and took steps to prevent a repeat, according to the statement. 

He continued by saying that the business is in contact with traditional institutions and security organizations to determine the following steps.

“Investigations so far revealed that six persons lost their lives in the unfortunate electrical incident that occured in Zaria last week,” the statement said.

The statement expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and said steps had been taken to prevent a recurrence of high tension.

“In the cause of its investigations, the company’s officials visited Gwargwaje community and met with families of the affected persons on three occasions since the incident to mourn with them and gather relevant information on the incident,” he said.

According to the statement, no new fatalities have been reported since its last visit to the community on Saturday. It also noted that it had gathered comprehensive information on all those who had been hurt or lost their belongings, and that it had been in contact with the appropriate security agencies and the traditional institution in Zaria to discuss the next course of action.
