A Nigerian lady has sparked intense debate on social media after openly stating that she cannot remain loyal to a man who earns ₦500,000 per month.
The controversial remark was made during an interview captured in a video that has since gone viral on X (formerly Twitter).
According to her, financial stability plays a major role in sustaining commitment in a relationship, especially amid Nigeria’s rising cost of living. She argued that a ₦500,000 monthly income is barely enough to cover a man’s personal responsibilities, let alone support her lifestyle.
She claimed that financial pressure would eventually lead to frustration, which could increase the likelihood of infidelity.
“I can’t date a guy that earns ₦500k monthly, and if I do, I will definitely cheat on him. What is ₦500k going to do? What about my lifestyle?” she said.
Her statement has triggered widespread reactions online. Many critics described her comments as materialistic and morally flawed, insisting that loyalty is a personal value and should not be determined by income. Others pointed out that millions of Nigerian families survive on far less than ₦500,000 monthly.
However, some users defended her stance, arguing that she was simply being honest about her expectations and that transparency is better than pretending to be content in a relationship that does not meet one’s standards.
The video continues to trend as Nigerians debate whether financial capacity should influence loyalty and commitment in modern relationships.
