A former tenant has shared a chilling experience that forced him to abruptly relocate from what initially appeared to be a quiet and well-kept residential compound in Asaba, Delta State.
The unsettling account was posted on X (formerly Twitter) by a user identified as @TheKingDaughtaa, and it has since sparked intense reactions online.
According to the narrator, he had rented a mini flat in a calm compound with just five tenants. Everything seemed normal at first, except for one apartment that remained permanently locked. No one was ever seen entering or leaving the flat, leading him to assume it was simply vacant.
Things reportedly took a disturbing turn when strange noises began late at night.
He claimed that around 2 a.m., he would hear sounds coming from the locked flat—movement, furniture being dragged, and footsteps—despite the apartment appearing unoccupied. When he casually asked the landlord about it, he was told the tenant traveled frequently and was “hardly ever around.”
The explanation didn’t stop the incidents.
According to him, the noises continued: flushing toilets, running water, and footsteps, mostly at night. His concern deepened after a conversation with an elderly woman who had lived in the compound much longer.
When he asked her if the tenant in the locked flat had returned, she reportedly looked confused and replied that no one had lived in that apartment for over a year, adding cryptically that “that landlord will lie himself into trouble one day.”
Still trying to rationalize the situation, the tenant brushed it off—until another incident pushed him over the edge.
During a power outage one evening, he noticed a candle flickering inside the supposedly empty flat.
Disturbed, he confronted the landlord again. This time, the landlord allegedly decided to come clean.
According to the tenant, the landlord revealed that a young man had rented the flat the previous year. He was described as quiet and withdrawn, rarely leaving the house. Then one day, he simply disappeared.
No notice. No calls. Rent fully paid.
After weeks of no response, the landlord said they broke into the apartment—only to find everything intact: clothes, shoes, phones, and even the man’s ID card. There were no signs of struggle. Police were reportedly involved, but investigations yielded nothing. The man was never found.
The landlord allegedly admitted he never informed new tenants because “nobody wants to live in a flat where someone disappeared.” He said he cleaned the apartment, kept it locked, but rumors persisted that people still heard the missing tenant at night.
The storyteller concluded by saying he moved out the following week, ending his post with a haunting question:
“What would you have done if you were in my shoes?”
The story has since triggered heated debates online, with many users questioning the landlord’s honesty, while others shared similar eerie experiences and warned against withholding such information from tenants.
