A Ghanaian MP has mocked Harry Maguire, comparing the country’s vice president to the England and Manchester United star.
During a debate in Ghana’s parliament, Issac Adongo compared Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s performance to the defender’s decline since moving to Old Trafford.
MPs erupted in laughter at Mr Adongo’s unexpected football analogy, in which he accused Dr Bawumia of scoring numerous economic “own goals”
Before joining Manchester United, Maguire “was tackling everybody and throwing his body everywhere… he was seen as the best defender in the world.” according to Mr Adongo.
However, following his £80 million move to Old Trafford, Maguire “became the biggest threat at the centre of the Manchester United defence”
“He was tackling Manchester players and helping opponents.” “When you see the opponents go to score, Mr Speaker, Maguire will score for them,” Mr Adongo said.
“Mr Speaker,” he went on, “you may recall that in this country we also have an economic Maguire.” We’re clapping for this economic Maguire because he’s the best at managing foreign exchange rates.
“The same economic Maguire was lecturing at Central University on how to restore the value of the Cedi (Ghana’s currency).” Mr. Speaker, why did we give this Maguire the chance to be at the heart of our defense? He has become the rest of our own goals.”
Mr Adongo said Ghana’s “biggest issue” is that “we pay the appearance fee for this Maguire” as he ran through a series of dire economic figures.
During the World Cup, Harry Maguire has been the brunt of many jokes. The football analogies continued in parliament, when another member warned against re-electing the former president, comparing it to Chelsea’s decision to re-sign Romelu Lukaku.
Members were told by Alex Tetteh Djornobuah MP that it would be better to “maintain Maguire” rather than bring back a player they now know to be “the worst striker in the whole world”
