An attempt to compromise the domain of its website has been confirmed by Guaranty Trust Bank Plc.
Wednesday’s hacking attempt happened just one day after the bank renewed its domain name. As a result, there was a brief outage on the website, preventing users from accessing online services.
This caused a great deal of anxiety and media reports claiming that the bank’s website had been copied, possibly endangering the privacy of its customers.
In a statement on Thursday signed by its management and sent to our correspondent, the bank stated that the incident was unsuccessful and its website was not cloned.
It also allayed concerns about customer data being compromised, stressing that the bank does not store customer information on its website.
“Our attention has been drawn to reports in the media alleging that hackers have seized the bank’s website, cloned it, and intercepted customer data,” stated the statement titled “Alleged Web Domain Hack: GTBank Provides Clarity.”
“We would like to reassure all of our customers and stakeholders that the bank’s website has not been copied and that we do not store customer information on our website, and as such, there has been no instance of compromise of customer data, even though there was an isolated incident of an attempt to compromise our website domain.”
According to the statement, the bank’s information security specialists are presently restoring domain settings nonstop.
Additionally, GTBank stressed its steadfast dedication to protecting consumer information and urged clients to maintain composure and faith in the bank’s strong security protocols.
“We can assure our customers that our website will be up shortly. Our team of information security experts is working around the clock to restore domain settings.
“We kindly request that all of our clients ignore the assertions made in these press articles, and we reassure you of our steadfast dedication to protecting client information. Thank you for your continued support,” the statement added.
Further investigation by our correspondent revealed that the website is currently operational.
