A Nigerian graduate who, fed up with the job market and hardships in his homeland, set fire to his university degree and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate has generated a lot of discussion online.
In a social media video, the young man, who wished to remain anonymous, described how he attended university for seven years and graduated with a second class lower grade point average (GPA) of 3.4, which was just below the 3.5 needed for a second class upper.
He claimed he felt always unlucky because of the disappointment of barely missing a higher classification. He had always wanted to be a singer, but when that career path failed, he looked for stability in the corporate world.
His breaking point, though, occurred during a recent job interview when he was presented with a 95,000 naira salary offer. He complained that he would barely have enough money to live on each month because ₦60,000 of it would go toward transportation alone.
Desperate and furious, he burned his NYSC and academic credentials, expressing his dissatisfaction with his situation and the nation.
“No regret because why me with 3.4 GPA and 2.5 GPA graduate gather dey second class? I’m always depressed anytime I remember how unlucky I was graduating with 3.4 GPA; so let it go to hell. This country would turn you to a mad person,” he noted.
The incident has triggered a wave of reactions on social media, with many sympathizing with his pain while others caution against such extreme actions.
