Goods worth millions of naira are destroyed as fire guts a building in Balogun Market

A fire gutted the topmost part of a three-story building on number 74, Martins Street, by Lagos State Development and Property Corporation, LSDPC Building, Lagos Island, yesterday, destroying goods worth millions of naira.

According to an eyewitness, the fire began around 12.45 p.m. but was quickly extinguished by men from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service before it could spread to neighboring shops. 

The agency’s fire service men from Ebute Elefun, Oniru, and Alausa Headquarters were the first responders to contain the fire.

The building is used for textile trading on the ground floor, shops on the first floor, and clothing stores on the second and third floors. 

Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed the incident, saying, “It is on record that no injury or casualty is recorded in the operations.” 

As of press time, the fire had been completely extinguished, and a damping operation was underway.

“The topmost floor Fire affected 2 stores, second floor; none shops and three stores as both first and ground floor were protected from the severity of the fire.

“The investigation into the cause of the incident will commence immediately after the mitigation is concluded, Adeseye assured.

Meanwhile, affected traders have been lamenting their losses; some have claimed that they had just stocked their stores with new goods worth millions of dollars prior to the inferno.
