Pope Benedict XVI, the former leader of the Catholic Church, passed away at the age of 95.
The announcement was made on Thursday in a brief statement by the Vatican’s spokesman, Matteo Bruni.
“With sadness I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34 in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican,” the statement reads.
Remember that Pope Benedict was the first pope to step down from his position as leader of the Catholic Church since the Middle Ages in 2013.
