Ex-Accountant General Kidnapped in Cross River

Rose Bassey, the former Accountant General of Cross River, has reportedly been kidnapped by unknown gunmen.

She was reportedly abducted along with three others on Tuesday evening while traveling along the Calabar-Ikom Highway’s Uyanga-Ikomita axis.

The assailants halted vehicle movement on the highway, according to reports, because there were sporadic shootings on the highway while the gunmen were operating.

Evangelist Edim Edim Omin, a popular cleric in the state, was also shot at but escaped with bullet wounds and was being treated at an undisclosed hospital, according to Naija News.

The kidnapped former account general was with her driver when she was abducted around 5:00 p.m. yesterday on her way back from her farm at Ekpri Iko after Iwuru in the state’s Biase Local Government Area.

Earlier, the state police Command stated that tactical teams, including the Anti-Cultism and Kidnapping Squad, had been deployed to that axis of the highway to protect motorists and commuters.

Various security agents, including the Anti-Kidnapping Squad, Operation Akpakwu, Operation Sting, and Operation Restore Peace, were stationed at various points along the road.

SP Irene Ugbo, the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident to reporters, noting that the command is working to ensure that the four abducted people are released unharmed.

She stated again that the Command is working to restore normalcy to that highway axis.

“It’s a sad reality for us, and as I speak with you, the Commissioner of Police is heading to that axis to assess the situation,” she explained.
